Robert Chisholm’s Interpreting the Historical Books: An Exegetical Handbook is a rich resource for the teacher and preacher of the Old Testament. In chapter 2 – “Primary Themes of the Historical Books” – Chisholm provides very helpful summaries which we present here in brief as a “bonus” summary for our Books At a Glance members.
Joshua
Primary Themes
The faithfulness of God is the dominant theme of Joshua. See 21:43-45; cf. 23:14.
A corollary of this theme is that of the presence of God with his people. See 1:5, 9, 17. Notice also the parading of the ark before Israel in chapters 3-4 and its lead role in chapter 6 at Jericho. This is summarized in 23:3 – “the Lord your God fights for you.”
Hence, the power of the Lord is a dominant theme also. See 2:10-11; 4:23-24; 5:1; 11:4-9; 17:16-18, etc.
