A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance
This little series of books was a good idea. Each book attempts just what the titles describe and consist of brief comments on basic subjects and themes aimed at guiding the reader to a better grasp of the Bible, its teaching, and how to understand it.
In most respects I think Heiser accomplishes his goal. His guidance overall focuses on foundational and structural themes, and it is all very easily accessible to the average reader. In the main, these books would doubtless prove valuable and instructive.
However, in my view the value of the books is marred not just by some of Heiser’s uncommon views on some subjects (such as his claim that the “us” in Gen.1:26 has reference to angels as well as to God) but, more importantly, by his ambivalence on some more important doctrines (such as eternal punishment). This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the books are aimed at less advanced Bible students.
