A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance
by Fred G. Zaspel
This book calls for gospel integrity among Christians, challenging them to reject legalism that masquerades as devout religion but hides destructive pride, idolatry, and even apostasy. Reeves addresses the issue of hypocrisy in today’s church by examining the ways the Pharisees were mistaken in their understanding of three essential points of the gospel:
- The Father’s revelation in the Bible
- The Son’s redemption in the gospel
- The Spirit’s regeneration of our hearts
Reeves writes: “I hope to show that our most elemental in-house issues (from our partisanship to our pragmatism) are inextricably related to our failure to have integrity to these gospel essentials. As Luther saw, true reformation of the church takes more than a moral bath. It requires the gospel. Without the gospel, our attempts at reform will be superficial.”
