A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance

By Fred Zaspel

We just have to mention the arrival of this new book, and I trust our readers will forgive me if this seems like self-promotion. I am not a fan of all of the “Views” books, but many of them have proven to be very helpful in identifying and understanding varying approaches to issues on which faithful Christian interpreters differ. Such a book on Romans 9-11 is certainly warranted, and I think the result is a resource that will be helpful for those considering the alternative viewpoints.

All three sides agree that the focus of Romans 9-11 is ethnic Israel, but from there the viewpoints diverge, providing insight into the critical exegetical turning points and the various hermeneutical questions involved.

  • Jim Hamilton and I team up together for the “Typological Mass Conversion of Israel” view.
  • Michael Vlach defends the “Non-Typological Mass Conversion” view.
  • Ben Merkle takes the “Typological Non Mass Conversion” view.

Merkle and Vlach proved to be excellent and gracious sparring partners, and it was a pleasure working with them and editors Compton and Naselli.

As with all the “Views” books, we do hope the “correct” view wins out, and helping to determine just which view is that correct one is the purpose of the book. I believe it will be helpful to that end. I think you’ll agree!
