A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance
by Fred G. Zaspel
Doug Moo’s NICNT commentary on Romans has been available for some years (now in its second edition), and it has in my opinion established itself as the gold standard of commentaries on Romans. It is the commentary on Romans. You just haven’t studied Romans as well as you should until you’ve read this excellent exhaustive work.
I suppose it’s because his larger commentary is so important that it was not until recent years that I read his NIVAC commentary on Romans (Kindle version here). This down-sized and more popular-level commentary obviously can’t offer what the NICNT commentary offers, but I have found it wonderfully valuable. As a quicker guide to an overall grasp of Romans, it just can’t be beaten, and it is a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I have not yet read Moo’s Encountering the Book of Romans: A Theological Survey (Kindle version here), but we can safely anticipate here another very profitable guide to this important NT epistle. As Tom Schreiner says in his commendation,
It is hard to imagine a more reliable guide to Romans than Douglas Moo. His expertise as a commentator is renowned and rightly so. In this work he distills his knowledge in a way that is accessible to the ordinary person. If one wants to become acquainted with Paul’s theology and gospel in Romans, this volume is the perfect place to begin.
Moo also provides the Romans contribution to the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary series (paperback or Kindle) and the study guides to both the NLT Study series (here) and the Bringing the Bible to Life series (here).
When you study Romans, you might as well get the best guide – get Moo.
