[1] Compiled by John T. “Jack” Jeffery, Pastor, Wayside Gospel Chapel, Greentown, PA. This bibliography had its genesis with a post by Chris Poe, “SLJ Bibliography” (21 DEC 2011), on the “S. Lewis Johnson Appreciation Society” Facebook group page at https://www.facebook.com/notes/s-lewis-johnson-appreciation-society/slj-bibliography/10150544248943478 [accessed 25 FEB 2011]. The work proceeded from there at his invitation, and with his approval. Chris also credits Lynda Ochsner with input to this early stage of the bibliography.

[2] Another title that comes up in WorldCat searches was not included: Sparks From My Chimney (Columbia, SC: R. L. Bryan, 1963). The author, Samuel Lewis Johnson (from Charleston, S.C.), dedicates the volume of poetry to his wife, Kathleen Norvell Johnson. This cannot be S. Lewis Johnson, Jr., even though he lived in Charleston, S.C. from age 14 until college graduation in 1937, since his wife’s name was Mary Sibley McCormack. However, it may safely be assumed that this author is his father, since S. Lewis Johnson, Jr.’s obituary lists his mother’s name as Kathleen. See Legacy at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dallasmorningnews/obituary.aspx?pid=1858496 [accessed 5 MAR 2018]. This assumption was confirmed as true by Dr. Johnson’s daughter, Grace Monroe, in an email to Fred Zaspel on 7 MAR 2018.

[3] The possibility must be entertained that this publication, An Expositor’s New Testament library, and The Literature of the New Testament: a Recommended Library for the New Testament Expositor are the same work in different editions that were retitled in the course of their development. None of them are readily available so librarians at Dallas Theological Seminary, and Emmaus Bible College were contacted. Their replies follow.

Lolana Thompson, Public Services and Special Collections, Turpin Library at Dallas Theological Seminary: “I did not find a copy of The Literature of the New Testament in our library. WorldCat lists only 1 library with that title, Emmaus Bible College. I did compare Bibliography for New Testament Exegesis and Exposition to An Expositor’s New Testament Library, and the contents look the same to me. They both have 23 pages and seem to be the same at the beginning, the end, and a page in between. The Bibliography did not have a title page, so the title was taken from the paper cover. The copy titled Expositor’s…  had a title page. They appear to have been printed at different times, which probably explains the different names.” [Source: email 22 FEB 2018 to John T. Jeffery.]

John H. Rush, Librarian at Emmaus Bible College: “As far as The literature of the New Testament is concerned I would believe that it was his first listing.  It does not appear to have any titles from the 1960’s which are included in the bibliography for N.T….” [Source: email 23 FEB 2018 to John T. Jeffery.]

The transcript of the sermon with this title and text currently on the SLJ Institute is similar, but not identical to the content of this chapter. [23] With few exceptions these were identified on Galaxie Software at https://www.galaxie.com. A subscription is required for full access. All of the articles listed that were published in Bibliotheca Sacra, Emmaus Journal, Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society, Reformation and Revival, and Trinity Journal are available there. The author’s name for all of these articles except one appears as “S. Lewis Johnson, Jr.” The reprinted article published in the Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society  has the author’s name as “S. Lewis Johnson.” Where Scripture texts were the focus of the article, yet were not indicated in the article title, they have been added in parentheses. Many errors were detected in the listed search results on EBSCO in the Christian Periodical Index (CPI), and American Theological Library Association (ATLA) indices. Most of these had to do with page numbering, and most of those errors involved the inclusion of blank pages following the article in the numbering. In some cases the page numbering was for a preceding or following article, or an entire multi-author article/symposium only part of which was authored by S. Lewis Johnson, Jr. Many article title variations were noted in the indices. With few exceptions titles and page numbers were visually confirmed from print editions. Titles are as they appear in these print editions, and may differ from the listings in Galaxie Software, Christian Periodical Index, and American Theological Library Association. An asterisk preceding an entry in this section indicates that the title was previously published elsewhere. The documentation for the original articles will be included in the footnote for each of these. Some may be puzzled about an article in the EBSCO search results under the author’s name: Lewis Johnson, “Who Was the Beloved Disciple?,” Expository Times 77:5 (FEB 1966), pp. 157- 158. That “Lewis Johnson” is not S. Lewis Johnson, Jr., since the article notes his residence as “Nailsworth, Glos.” (Gloucestershire, England). Another article that came up in the EBSCO search results from the Christian Periodical Index with the author as “S. Lewis Johnson” was: “Career Training: Schools That Can Help You,” Christian Life 35 (Sep 1973), pp. 24-25+. A photocopy was obtained via Inter-Library Loan to verify this article since it was not otherwise available, and both the publication and the subject seemed not to be typical of Dr. Johnson. In this case the author was clearly indicated as “Susan L. Johnson” on the photocopied article.

This article originally appeared in the April–June, 1967 edition of Bibliotheca Sacra. Except for changes in format and the two editor’s notes, it appears as it was originally published. Used with permission.” Op. cit., pg. 51, footnote 1. The one exception noted is that the author’s name is listed as “S. Lewis Johnson, Jr.” in the original article, but “S. Lewis Johnson” in this reprint.

[43] Listed as a contributor, but contributions not documented, or articles not signed.

[44] Signed articles; also see “List of Contributors,” op. cit., pg. 8.

[45] S. Lewis Johnson is included among the 104 members of the “NIV Translators and Editors” (SEP 1993), s.v. #42, on “The NIV Committee on Bible Translation,” on Michael Marlowe’s Bible Research at http://www.bible-researcher.com/niv-translators.html [accessed 3 MAR 2018]. Attention was drawn to this contribution by Dr. Fred Zaspel who remembered Dr. Johnson telling him about it.
