Chapter 1: The Bible and Marriage
God created male and female to be paired together, and the opening chapters of Genesis explain that marriage and parenting are for one man and one woman joined together in the covenant of matrimony. Marriage is to be a lifelong commitment. Christians should opt for the most maximally visible and committed forms that their culture has when it comes to marriage ceremonies. Cohabitation does not have the same kind of commitment as a covenant made in a public ceremony. As long as people are able to make their own reasonable decisions, they should be free to marry anyone without respect to race, ethnicity, nationality, etc. Marriage is not reserved exclusively for Christians (i.e., non-Christians have the right to marry), but it must be between a man and a woman who are adults. Those getting married should give their own consent to the union, especially since Christians should only marry another believer. Far too often a believer has thought that they will win the non-Christian to Christ, when in reality they are led away from the Lord. Not only is marrying in the Lord an express command, but it accords with wisdom and the practicalities of living with someone in a marriage covenant. “Marriage is for mutual support, companionship, reproduction of the human race, and the promotion of sexual purity.” Scripture is clear that sexual relations are only proper within the boundaries of the covenant of marriage. . . .
