Chapter 1. I Am Woman

What it means to be a “woman” is a subject of hot debate in our culture. If not critically engaged, Christian women run the great danger of simply adopting the feminine values on offer. Byrd seeks to draw women’s gaze off of these competing values to the biblical model, chiefly as exemplified in Eve.

The role and purpose of a woman is identified as “helper” to Adam in the biblical account. Byrd draws on Bruce Waltke’s definition of this term to structure her own comments: “to honor his vocation, to share his enjoyment,” and “to respect the prohibition.” These three roles can be interpreted as …
