A Book Review from Books At a Glance

Disney has inundated us with princesses. They capture the imagination of young girls who aspire to be just like these fairy tale icons. Sarah Reju makes a bold proclamation to these girls that God is indeed better than any princess.
Using an A-Z format, Reju takes twenty-six characteristics of princesses and points out how God exceeds them at every level. From her beauty to her empire to her love to her throne, God is better. Each page repeats the refrain “God is better than princesses!” and supports that statement with a verse from scripture. Aspects of God concerning His omnipotence, His omnipresence, His majesty, His sacrificial love, and His eternal existence are declared. Wonderful contrasts are set up: a fairy tale princess is imaginary, but God is real; a princess is waited on by servants, but God became a servant; a princess’s empire will one day crumble, but God’s kingdom is forever. These truths help cement in the mind of young children that although it is fun to imagine and pretend, it is important to understand the greatness and majesty of our God and our need to love and obey Him.
I find this to be a valuable book for the times we live in, and I think young girls would greatly benefit from reading it. I’m not a fan of the cover art, I think the illustrations inside are better, and I hope that parents don’t pass it by based on that. It really is a worthwhile book that exalts our great God.
