A Book Review from Books At a Glance
By Kristin Stiles
What would it look like if you took a Sunday School curriculum from Children Desiring God and put it in paperback form that was accessible to parents at home? Not only would it look like the Making HIM Known series, but that’s exactly what it would be. God’s Wisdom is the fourth book in this series and it examines the topics of wisdom and foolishness as presented by Proverbs and various other passages in the Old and New Testaments.
Right up front, I would caution parents that this book is not one to be casually read with your child. This book has more the feel of a textbook – something to be studied. Sally Michael does a magnificent job of presenting lessons complete with scriptural support and footnotes to explain concepts or further delve into the topic. She even provides word studies on the various Hebrew words that are translated “fool” in our English texts. Following each lesson are questions for further discussion and consideration and an activity that the family could engage in together to drive home the main point of the chapter.
Don’t get the idea, though, that this is some dry academic book. Sally Michael is a skilled author and she makes the lessons very interesting and presents applications that are very relevant to children. She restates familiar accounts from the Bible, but then she also encourages you and your child to read them directly from Scripture yourselves. As a homeschooling mom, I would see this as a wonderful resource for your home Bible classes. As a mom in general, I see this as having great value for the whole family as a devotional. You and your children would benefit greatly from this book. Dig deep into the teachings on wisdom and find your children and yourself growing to be more like Jesus.
