A Kids & Moms Book Review from Books At a Glance
By Hannah Ahlgren
The disciples of Jesus were taught about His deity multiple times during His ministry on earth. Jesus calming the wind and waves is an important example of Him revealing His deity. He stopped the storm and the disciples witnessed, in a clear way, that Jesus is God. This is exactly what readers young and old will get a picture of when they read The Storm that Stopped. Prepare to learn this story anew as you read it to young children. Author Alison Mitchell captures her audience with the story of Jesus calming the storm, and the story is illustrated beautifully by Catalina Echeverri.
The beginning pages of the story show Jesus teaching the multitudes. He then has the disciples take Him out to sea to teach them. The storm started when Jesus was sleeping. For a child, the story of Jesus calming the storm would be so exciting. The excitement and danger of the storm are depicted with discourse that children will understand. Finally, Jesus comes through to save the day. Mitchell emphasizes that Jesus simply SPOKE. He stopped the storm.
When my children and I were looking at the beautiful art while reading, we had a sense of being in the scene with Jesus and His disciples. The speech bubbles are one of our favorite parts of the illustrations. They have a way of drawing the reader into the story even more. They go with the writing and help to bring to life what the disciples were going through. As Jesus calms the storm the disciples ask the famous question from the Bible, “Who is this? Even the winds and waves obey him” (Matthew 8:27).
